Travel Writing, Good For The Soul, Good For The World
I love to travel. It started for me early in my career when I had to spend a week in Thailand to help a client upgrade their IT systems. The week was very hectic, 13 hour days at work, social business invitations after, I didn’t have a lot of time to myself at all. I ended up taking a day of annual leave though and staying in Bangkok for the weekend and the following Monday. Those three days opened my eyes. Thailand was such a different world to what I had in Melbourne, Australia. I was hooked, I needed to see what else the world had to offer. I’d officially caught the travel bug.
Since the Thailand introduction to the world, I’ve been sent to Africa, Europe and throughout Asia. My business trips were not where is ended though, with all the mileage points I accrued, I continued to travel in my spare time. I simply love seeing new places and meeting new people.
In my youth, quite often I lacked foresight. I failed to do the things I should have to make life better as I went along. Not so with my travel experiences. I always remembered to pack my cameras, a travel diary and a pen. Travel became the inspiration for my art. Now I have a wondrous array of photos adorning my walls and literature packing my bookshelves. All remind me of the wonderful experiences I’ve had and the tremendous personal growth that resulted.
When reflecting on these journeys, I can see how much my mind has been opened by the experiences I have had. In witnessing the diversity the world has to offer, I have become a wiser person, a better person.
It is in the accepting and embracing of these different ways of life and the people who live them, that my heart has been opened. I have a greater capacity for love now. I can accept people for what they are, for what they offer me without prejudice and without animosity. And if they live in ways I cannot fathom, I can appreciate them even while I can never join them.
In recognizing how blessed I have been with my opportunities to travel and how much personal growth I have enjoyed from those experiences, I also acknowledge not everyone is as fortunate as I. Not everyone has the opportunity to witness and experience the diversity the world has to offer. Not everyone can afford to travel and meet people of remarkably different background to their own. This is why I write about my experiences. In sharing the things I have seen, experienced and learned, perhaps I can help other people open their minds and hearts also.
